Gallatin Gateway was named because it is a major gateway into Yellowstone National Park. Originally, it was called Salesville, after the two Sales brothers who operated a mill there in the 1860s. Once famous for its dude ranches, today, tourists of all types find themselves enjoying this friendly community on their way in and out of Yellowstone.

One popular local attraction is the historic Gallatin Gateway Inn. Built in the mid 1920s, the Inn served weary train travelers on their way to Yellowstone. With arched windows, carved beams, and Spanish-style corbels, the Inn is designated as one of the finest historic inns in the Rocky Mountain West. It was considered one of the most luxurious hotels of its time as well, offering telephones in every room. Today, the Inn boasts its ability to take you away from all the hustle and bustle of the technical world and return you to the romantic days of the Old West. The Gallatin Gateway Inn even has the original railroad clock ticking in its lobby.
