Belgrade was founded in 1882 by entrepreneur Thomas B. Quaw. Quaw liked the land that he found along the newly surveyed Northern Pacific Railway and decided to start a community. Belgrade was named after the capital of Serbia in appreciation to the Serbian investors of the railroad. Since its founding, Belgrade has grown slowly and most of its businesses are run by old-time local families who have a strong loyalty to their community.

Belgrade is located on I-90 running east and west. With its centralized location, Belgrade provides easy access to several points of interest. Yellowstone National Park, Lewis and Clark Caverns, Big Sky Ski and Summer Resort, Museum of the Rockies, and Nevada and Virginia Cities are all within close driving distance of Belgrade. The town itself offers attractions such as golf courses, ice rinks, playing fields, theaters, country clubs, parks, and a special events center.

Sitting at 4451 feet, Belgrade offers moderate temperatures all year long. The winters are known to dip down into the single digits with an average snowfall of about 48 inches a year. The summers warm up to the mid 80s and yield sunny skies. The average precipitation is a little over a foot per year.
