Big Timber Montana Chamber of Commerce

Touting access to remote wilderness and small town appeal, the Big Timber Chamber of Commerce provides the information you need when planning a trip to Sweet Grass County.

About Big Timber
Big Timber was named by an individual who had never seen it. A railroad official in St. Paul Minnesota named the area after he had read entries from William Clark's journals. The entries describe an area of large cottonwood trees.

Even if you have never been to Bib Timber, chances are that you are “seen” it, at least parts of it; as the movies “A River Runs Through It” and “The Horse Whisperer” were filmed here.

Ideally located in the valley formed by the Yellowstone and Boulder Rivers, Big Timber is a successful agricultural area, now having a population of roughly 1700.

Activities
Big Timber is the County Seat of Sweet Grass County. This County is truly where the plains meet the Rocky Mountains.
Being surrounded on three sides by The Crazy Mountains and the Absaroka Beartooths, the area hosts the gateway to the Absaroka Beartooth Wilderness and the Gallatin Forest. The Yellowstone River, Boulder River, and many smaller streams in Sweet Water County are excellent places to fish. Camping, hiking, backpacking, trail riding and more are enjoyed in the surrounding area.
