Fishing and boating in Montana can be done on the Hyalite Reservoir. As the winter ice melts, the reservoir draws in visitors from across the state from May through till the end of the summer when the waters are warmer and there are plenty of fish filling the lake and open waters for non-motorized pleasure boats.
The majority of boating involves tubers, canoeists, kayakers and small pleasure boaters. There are plenty of excellent launching points, many of which are found in rustic camping spots along the shoreline.
Fishing the Hyalite is also a treat. Many fishermen fly and bait fish in the mornings and evenings. Locals sometimes fish well into the early evening with lantern lights. Generally speaking, most fishing can be done with simple gear, small jigs, glowing hooks and worms or maggots. The main fish that attract many interested visitors include grayling and cutthroat trout, though the trout are the most predominant.
