Why Hire a Fishing Guide
Montana fly fishing guides are regulated throughout the state and carry a very strong ethic for safety, enjoyment, knowledge about local water and land conditions, and the regulations related to fishing the various waters. You should insist on a Montana state-licensed outfitter and guide (many are listed here) to enhance your fishing success and safety.
When fishing in Bozeman, Livingston, Big Timber, Gardiner, Ennis, Three Forks or the Big Sky areas, be aware that weather can quickly affect fishing and safety conditions. Since many larger Bozeman area rivers start high in the Yellowstone plateau, snow and thunderstorms occurring 150 miles away may adversely affect local conditions in mere hours.
Hypothermia is a big safety concern, mostly before July or after late August. Always be prepared with waders and other proper clothing in case you fall in the water unexpectedly. Many of the guides here are used to Montana temperatures. Don't let a guide’s casual attire prevent you from being prepared with appropriate clothing.
Fishing License Information
All nonresidents 15 years and older are required to get a fishing license available from many area sporting good stores and via the Montana Department of Fish Wildlife & Parks. Anyone under 15 years old must be accompanied by a licensed adult. Those living in Montana for 6 months or longer are considered residents and may apply for resident licenses.
- Temporary 2-day fishing permit = $15.00
- Temporary 10-day fishing permit = $43.50
- Full Season fishing = $60.00
- Conservation license (required with all forms of fishing licenses above) = $10.00
