Before venturing out to a local stream, river or lake, the smart angler should check online with many of these shops for regularly updated river reports, possible hatches, last-minute changes in fishing regulations, and to purchase any last minute gear necessary to have a truly enjoyable trip.

As with any sport, retail shops have their own unique personalities and specialties. Some offer intimate, personalized services for a regionally, or river-specific set of clients; while others cater to larger communities, carry larger inventories of items and offer wider varieties of services and expertise.  All shops typically have guides available for day trips to local waterways, just be sure that they have expertise in the waters you intend to fish. Even if you have to go a bit out of your way, making sure you get good advice from a source you trust is often more important than the few dollars you might save in gas and the convenience factor.
