Two fascinating works are on display in this both sumptuous and triumphant performance.
Percussionist Anthony Di Sanza joins us as we present the orchestral premiere of American Composer Michael Udow's ethereal percussion concerto Moon Shadows. Reflections on a moonlit pond offer the inspiration for this magical work, based on 10 Japanese Haiku from Crickets Songs and More Cricket Songs. Next we turn to the stern, majestic and uncompromising landscape of Finland as we present Jean Sibelius' masterful Symphony No. 2. At a time when Finland was threatened by soviet domination, Sibelius' 2nd Symphony displayed a graphic portrayal of the Finnish struggle against Russia, and a new spirit of Finnish nationalism emerged and triumphed.
